Six, Nine, A Viewpoint or Maya?

Let me pick up the thread from the earlier post on Maya. When you write a “6” on your left hand and turn your palms at the person standing opposite to you, he will read that as a “9”.This is obvious, anybody will say. The point is not about the digit being a “6” or a “9”. It is about what we make out of things presented to us. This is a subjective matter and definitely there are no easy answers to this.

When man looks at the world, there are so many automatic processes that happen  within him. He develops a viewpoint, owing to these many complex processes occurring within him. When anyone gazes at a clear sky, when the sun has calmed down, he sees a bluish sky. What is the reality behind it? Is the sky or the ocean really blue?  Now views given for this blueness of the sky or ocean maybe bucketed as silly, scientific, deep, logical and a host of other labels. So there are two fundamental observations to this blueness. One is the color interpretation the eye and brain. The second is the viewpoint that the mind is churning out to support the senses. All said, the question is, Is the vision of the world true or an illusion?

Fundamentally, according to Vedic vision, the senses namely eyes, ears, nostrils, tongue, skin and the mind are imperfect in more ways than meets the eye. Since they are inherently  imperfect, they cannot reflect the correct position and state of any experience in the physical world, whatsoever. All our experiences of this physical world, is heavily influenced by the distortions of our thoughts, emotions, health etc, in addition to the already existing imperfections within the sense organs as enunciated by the Vedic view. For example our view about a certain individual may change overnight, if we were to have a bad day. So the question is; what is that which is unchanging?  There is something, certainly,  within us, something around us, in the light of which we agree to accept these imperfections, what is that? That substance, if we may call it so, is non-material, not off this world. Other than that substance, all else is Maya!

  1. Very thought provoking. So it means theres is A basic general interpretation of the world by the sense then there’s the individual view biase to perceptions? I’d want to know more about the fault in the senses. It’s the first time I’m hearing this and it has caught my attention.

True, the world is born in us through our interpretation of our senses. Without the senses, there wouldn’t be a world to perceive

    1. I am humbled by your kind queries.
Yes, the Shastras or the Vedic scriptures, as enunciated by the perfected beings/sages allude to the senses being grossly imperfect. They are essentially tendency to commit errors and mistakes (mind / senses based); they have biases and hence cannot see “as it is”; tendency to exaggerate; tendency to lie (the mind does it) even unconsciously and tendency to estimate which is not perfect because of the limitation of senses. Also in the senses have this tendency of “Seeing what we want to” .This means that senses reflect an extremely erroneous image of the world. All perceptions, however deep they may seem, are fundamentally error-prone.

      1. Interesting. I never considered them as errors. Just thought it’s a way of differentiation. Having that we live in a universe that is In continuous growth and expansion so is the earth and all the life forms on it. Hence the differentiation a part of the process.

A world of states, perceiving the different states depending on your level.of awareness.

But considering that the senses are erroneous somewhat changes some aspect of this. Thanks for sharing

      2. Yes, this is true. In fact, only on the perfect platform can this realization sink into our consciousness. The sages of the yore , came down, descended, in the perfect state and enunciated the ancient scriptures. They allude to this state of perfection and goad humans to be established in this perfect state. The Vedic texts are simply an invitation to get there; in fact in our most natural state we all are actually “that”. A great deal of spiritual practices are aimed at knocking down these walls created by the senses which create an unreal, limited world around us. In fact, the world that we see around is “Ego” created. Every human, is capable of becoming one with this experience that I am talking about.. But as long as we have endeavors of “this world”, getting to our original natural state is almost impossible. I am very fortunate that there are people like you, who are encouraged to know about this. In fact, I would consider this as a blessing of Providence, that such material is being appreciated even in a world that is driven , usually, by personal agenda. Thanks a ton.

      3. I’m glad that you consider this a blessing and I for stumbling into such wealth of knowledge in a topic of concern to me.

I understand what you mean by ‘That state ‘ we are co-creators and one with source on a literal level. True, to attain it is almost impossible since we struggle to forget who we really are our whole lives. Born into cultures and beliefs that drive us further from this truth.

Then there’s the persona. The masks we wear proudly to communicate who we are to the world and interact with it as us. The persona being just a mask. Bidding out true self deep within.

Finding our way back, reconnecting with source through experiences I believe is our true journey on this plain
